Colorado, Mom's house, concerts and grad school?

I had a great time out in Colorado with my good friend Sara Duke ("Dukers"). She picked me up from the airport with her good friend Jeremy and I hung out with the both of them the majority of the days I was there. They took me to all of the different breweries in Fort Collins, which is where they go to school at Colorado State University, and we had a great time. Fort Collins has "more breweries and restaurants than any other place in Colorado per square capita" according to Dukers and I believe her. We went to The New Belgium brewery, had some of their tasty "Fat Tire" amber ale, and also tried O'dell's, Breckenridge and other breweries as well. I mean, it was almost too much and at one point I asked Dukers how she existed in such a fantastic place.
Besides all of the different places we went to get something to drink, they also have every restaurant under the sun. We went to Old C's (twice because it was so good), Pickle Barrel, Johnny Caruso's, Lucky Joe's and others too. I think that most Coloradoans just drink most of the time and then are hungry, so they just overcompensated for this fact. But overall I had a great time out there.
I also went to see Dukers play Lacrosse (lax) with her 10th ranked team in the state and they won, with Dukers scoring two goals and an assist. Besides going to the game, Dukers drove Jeremy and I to her house to meet her folks. David and Pamela Duke are very nice and live in what can only be described as a mansion. David started Duke Communications many years ago and put out one of the first Microsoft and IBM magazines, so he made quite a bit during the information revolution. I was amazed by the house, but more than anything else I loved the theatre he put in in his basement. It seats about 10-20 people, has a computer projection screen and comfy recliners to relax in while watching the flick. We watched the Oscars down there with her neighbors and I was awestruck almost the entire time.
Needless to say, I had a great time out in CO with Dukers. We had plenty to eat, drink and have fun. I hope to go out and visit again in the summer sometime so I can stay at her lakehouse (?!?) and go to a Rockies game or something. It would be a lot of fun and spending time with friends from abroad always seems to make me deliriously happy.
When I came back, Mom called me and asked if I wanted to go to see the New York Philharmonic play on Tuesday night. She said that she was going with her school, and if I could get a ticket, it would be great to meet up. I went down to Lincoln Center, got a ticket, met up with Mom and saw Sir James Galway play the Pied Piper Suite and got to hear, for the first time live, "The Planets" by Gustav Holst. I really liked the piece, especially since I had played "Mars: The Bringer of War" in Wind Ensemble in High School. It was great to be able to go, as I never (sadly) go to such high class events.
After the performance, I caught a train upstate and Mom picked me up. I spent the next day driving back and forth between Rhinebeck and Poughkeepsie moving stuff in Mom's car from her old house to her new one. After we had successfully moved most of the stuff out of that house, we went to sleep since the movers were coming with all of our stuff from our Halcyon home at 8am. When they had moved everything inside from their massive truck, it was 2pm. I helped Mom as much as I could before she went to sleep that night. I actually went out with Jules and Paul (PW) over to New Paltz and met up with Collin and Randy. We ran into some other fellow Wallkillians Katherine Doncel and Maraka. It was good to see everyone again, and the fact that McGillicuddy's just got Smithwick's didn't hurt either. It was good to see everyone again and we had a great time.
On Friday, I came back down to the city to meet up with Jenny. We have had plans for this past weekend for some time now. We went to Hoboken to see The Pat McGee Band play at a local venue called Maxwell's. Michael Tolcher opened up for him and was really good too. The place was really small, so the concert was amazing as we were basically on stage. He played for more than 2 hours and even played some of his new stuff, which was great too.
On Saturday, we headed downtown to Irving Plaza to see Better Than Ezra play. Sadly, I wasn't feeling so hot because, I think, of something I had to eat. The concert was really good though, and I found myself singing songs that I had forgot that BTE had written. They come out with so many songs that sometimes you forget that you heard this one on the radio or that one from a friend. It was really great when they improvised a la Barenaked Ladies's style to mesh songs together that you never would have put together. It was a great time and Jenny and I were really happy we were able to go.
So this morning (I have been up for a while) I have been looking at graduate and even PhD programs around NYC. I have been really down lately with the whole work thing - no real work in 2 and a half months - just random 1-day jobs - has led me to believe that maybe I am not cut out for this kind of thing. I mean, Oma told me that Uncle Carl is looking for me at FoxNews, and I will certainly interview with them if they ever call me, but as of right now I am starting to rethink this whole working in television thing. I mean, I like it when I get to see Britney Spears, but the rest of the job is just shit. Sorry for the flagrancy, but it is. I didn't go to college to empty garbage cans, drive to Atlantic City, or work unGodly hours. I could have done that before I went to Marist, you know?
For example - I am out in Colorado, visiting Dukers, and hanging in her exorbitant living room with her parents and neighbors, all of whom are very well off. They ask me what I do and I say that I freelance for MTV and suddenly I am the most exciting person there. I know that MTV is a very noticeable place, but let's face it - the work I'm doing could be done by a well trained monkey. Just today I got a call to work - exciting right? I asked what I would be doing and they told me that I would be catching a bus to Atlantic City, sleeping (in an office nonetheless) until 3am, waking up, going to set, picking up 2 envelopes, and driving them in a car back to New York City. How much did they want to pay me? 25 dollars. Give me a break.
In any case, I am looking at different programs at everywhere from CUNY to Columbia at extending my study in Communications or Mathematics. I have always liked Math, but as only a Minor in it in college, I don't really have any of the prerequisites needed for such a program. Besides that fact, deadlines are almost all past, I need to take the GRE and have to find funding somewhere for the coming years. It should be a lot of fun.
But it is something I am thinking about because I am sure of a couple things. I can't be this random freelance for much longer because it doesn't pay the bills or give me any kind of savings account. I don't really like what I do - I mean, I like it when Heidi Klum touched my butt, but I don't like doing stuff that would go on a janitor's resume. I am more intelligent than most of the people in my field who are my superiors and feel like I need to be more challenged. And I don't want to be doing this 10 or 15 years from now.
Hmmmm....maybe I can still check on those random overseas programs. Who knows? I just want to stop being miserable by not having a dependable job.
